Caring for a Recently Replaced Windshield

After investing in your car to have your windshield replaced, it is crucial to properly care for it moving forward. We specialize in providing our customers with safe, professional auto glass replacements throughout the Pittsburgh area. Before you drive your car home, it is crucial for you to know how to care for your windshield properly.

To help you keep your windshield in good condition and ensure you get the most out of it, there are a few tips the team at Three Rivers Auto Glass recommends.

auto glass repairAftercare Before Driving Home

When your windshield is replaced, the new one is installed using a powerful adhesive that requires time to cure before you drive the vehicle. It is important to wait at least an hour before driving the vehicle after a windshield replacement. If you can, allow the adhesive to cure for two hours.

Waiting for the adhesive to cure allows it to dry enough to create a durable seal which is necessary to help your windshield function properly.

Aftercare for the Next 48 Hours

Your windshield will need time to cure completely, so there are several measures you can take within the first 48 hours to protect your windshield. At Three Rivers Auto Glass, we recommend:

Crack Open the Windows

If the weather allows, we recommend that you keep the windows in your vehicle rolled down slightly. This will help the curing process along and will also prevent the differences in pressure from affecting the integrity of the glass.

Don’t Touch the Adhesive

During the installation process, we will place adhesive tape around the perimeter of your windshield to protect the seal from debris or dust as it cures. Leave the tape in place for two days to allow the curing process to be completed.

Use Your Doors Gently

When you open and close the car doors, you create a rapid change in pressure inside the vehicle. This can compromise the integrity of the adhesive during curing. If you slam the door, it can puncture the seal around the windshield. For the first few days after your windshield replacement, be sure to gently close your car doors.

Clear off the Dashboard

If you have anything on your dashboard that is touching or pushing against your windshield, be sure to remove it during the curing process. You also want to avoid using your sunshade and putting a cover on your vehicle before the 48 hours are up.

Avoid the Car Wash

Within the first 48 hours of a windshield replacement, you can’t wash your vehicle at a high-pressure car wash. This water pressure can shift the molding or damage the seal of your windshield. Allow for two full days, so the molding and adhesive have time to fully cure.

How to Extend the Life of Your Windshield

To extend the lifespan of your windshield, we recommend that you regularly clean your windows inside and out. We also suggest that you park out of direct sunlight if possible. You also want to ensure you are replacing your windshield wipers when necessary to prevent windshield damage.

Additionally, drive cautiously when on backroads or gravel roads where rocks or debris could strike your windshield. We also recommend being cautious when following another vehicle by leaving ample space between cars.
